Several different choices for celebration, education and community connection are available for children and their families.
9?9:45 am Worship Celebration in the Large Assembly?a casual worship service that includes word, prayer and music that is wide ranging and celebratory. We have tables set up in the room where families can gather and the children can draw. Children are often included in parts of the service as well. Childcare is available for children ages 0-3 in the nursery. More about this service...
10?10:50 am Learning Hour?On the second Sunday of the month, First Church gathers for an intergenerational event called ?Meet in the Middle?. This is a chance to connect in new and creative ways with a different activity each month.
Children's Choir rehearsals may also take place during this time on other Sundays. Children may also hang out with their parents in the Caf?, the Thrift Store or outside on the lawn.
Childcare continues to be available for children ages 0-3 in the Nursery, which is upstairs in the part of the church that is near Channing Way (the south end of the church where the Office is).
11 am?12:15 pm Sunday School during the second worship service?children begin in the Sanctuary with their families for the first part of the 11am worship service and then, at the time of the Passing of the Peace, leave with their teachers for Sunday School. Classes are grouped by age for children preschool through 6th grade. The classes weave together progressive Christian education, spiritual awareness and development, peace and justice issues, and community connection. Children interact and explore the themes in a variety of ways including games, drama, stories, cooking, art, outside play, and service.
Sunday School takes place in the part of the church near Channing Way (the south side). The Nursery and Preschool/Kindergarten are upstairs. The 1st-3rd grade classes are downstairs and down the long hall and the 4th-6th grade class is in the room at the bottom of the stairs. Follow the blue signs! Parents pick up their children at 12:15pm in the classrooms.
8:30?11 am First Church Cafe?healthy food and a place to hang out with family and friends.
Music for Children
Children can sing together in the Children's Choir during some of the Learning Hours at 10 am and, on occasion, share their musical gifts with the church community in worship. Music is also used in Sunday School classes.
Special events for all ages insure that our children have opportunities to interact with the full church community, providing a strong circle of supportive connections. In particular, Meet in the Middle, which takes place on the second Sunday of each month during the Learning Hour at 10 am will feature special intergenerational activities to give everyone chances to connect in new ways.
