Christmas Eve in the Cloister

First Church Cloister

This year a third Christmas Eve service has been added?Christmas Eve in the Cloister?at 6 pm on Saturday, December 24. The whole community is invited to gather just outside the First Church Sanctuary that was damaged in the fire on September 30.

We will demonstrate the continued aliveness of that place and our own and feel ourselves at ?home? on Christmas.

We will gather in our own cloister, with candlelight, hot nourishing beverages, acoustic guitar and powerful singing. We?ll invite our homeless neighbors to join us, and any others looking for a really real observance.

We?ll feel the power of mirroring that first unsheltered Nativity, and worship in solidarity with the displaced Holy Family. Stripped of ceremony, simple and soulful, we?ll celebrate with what?s at hand and in unlikely, impromptu, eclectic community: just like the story we remember. We hope to have small gifts prepared for the unhoused who come?because in doing so we give to the Christ child.

First Church will also offer an All Ages Christmas Eve Service at 4 pm at Congregation Beth El and a Christmas Eve Service of Quiet Joy at 10 pm (special piano and string music beginning at 9:30 pm.)
