The Gifts of Music Throughout Advent

Tue, Nov 28, 2017

Each Sunday in Advent, First Church will be enlivened with special music of all sorts, organized and directed by First Church’s Director of Music Derek Tam.

On the first Sunday of Advent, December 3, Ancora, the young women’s ensemble of the Piedmont-East Bay Children’s Choir will sing several selections in morning service. The First Church Bell Choir will also perform.

On December 10, the First Church Festival Orchestra and the Sanctuary Choir sings Handel's "Glory to God" from Messiah and the opening movement from Vivaldi's Gloria in D major. First Church Organist Elizabeth Forsyth will play a concert setting of “Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella.” Michele McGeoy, Vickie Crebbin, Greg Beattie and Julie Greer will sing Mumford & Sons "I Will Wait."

On December 17, we'll gather early to sing Christmas carols before the service from 9:30 to 9:50 am, the First Church Gospel Choir and Songs of the Soul will sing, Nancy Knop and Holly Coates-Bash will perform harp duets, and the First Church Ukelele Orchestra will play.

First Church member Lewis Perry has written a chant called "Keep Watch" that will be sung throughout Advent.

On the morning of Christmas Eve, a 10 am Contemplative Service will be held, featuring the improvisational piano and wind music of Amar Khalsa.

On Christmas Eve, ensembles of First Church musicians will accompany favorite carols for the All Ages Christmas Eve Service at 4 pm, we’ll sing carols at Christmas Eve in the Cloister at 6 pm and the 10 pm Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will feature a wide variety of musical offerings. Special string quintet and organ music will begin that evening at 9:30 pm.
