This Learning Hour will cover some topics in “adult environmental education,” in order to help you become a more informed ecological citizen of California’s unique and beautiful natural environment. Topics covered will include the environmental history and ecology of California as a landscape adapted to fire, the role of colonialism and oppression in causing the present state of dysregulation of the fire cycle, the relationship between climate change and wildfire, and how our land management practices affect wildfire (one of Rowan’s areas of research). The talk will also include a personal perspective on the relationship between science, nature, and spirituality, and how connecting these areas can promote sustainable ways of living.

Our presenter Rowan Peterson (they/he) is an FCCB member who currently works as a researcher on fire and cattle grazing in California grasslands. They are a recent graduate of UC Berkeley and will be starting graduate school in ecology at UC Davis this fall.”
