Church Administrator + Community Coordinator

Job Type: On-site, Part-Time, Non-Exempt (20 hours/week)

Pay Range: $26-30/hour, dependent upon experience

Benefits: Paid Time Off + Sick Leave are accrued during the first year of employment and then offered on an allowance-basis at the beginning of the second year of employment. FCCB observes 14 annual holidays as paid time off for all employees on a ratio-basis dependent upon the average amount of hours the employee is scheduled to work weekly.

Schedule: The Church Administrator will be expected to work a regular weekly schedule that includes regular Sunday mornings, 9am-12pm, plus 17 regularly scheduled hours per week on weekdays, with the occasional special case of working outside of these regular days or hours. The specific week-by-week schedule is to be discussed with the role’s supervisor, the Director of Operations.

Workplace Context: First Congregational Church of Berkeley United Church of Christ is a progressive, welcoming community with a wonderful performance space. We are seeking a Church Administrator to meet the administrative and support needs of the church.

Essential duties include:

  • Answer phone calls and email inquiries  about the church from members and the general public
  • Cultivate and coordinate a volunteer team to assist in reception-oriented office tasks during weekday hours not otherwise covered by Church Community Coordinator’s regular hours
  • Create and send weekly online email newsletter, collaborating with fellow staff members to gather relevant information, announcements, event information, etc. 
  • Update information on the church’s calendar and website on an ongoing basis
  • Collect and coordinate the church’s Annual Report with input from committee chairs and staff
  • Coordinate with families for special services such as memorials
  • Spearhead logistics  for retreats and special events by completing tasks such as: organizing volunteers to aid in execution of the events, ordering necessary materials and supplies, arranging lodging details, setting up registrations on Realm, etc.
  • Track information about attendance and membership using our online database Realm and maintain a weekly ongoing report of attendee information using Google Sheets
  • Support congregation’s activities and space use in our room use database MIDAS, in coordination with the Director of Operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and two years post-secondary education
  • Two or more years of  office administration, volunteer coordination, event planning, and/or customer service experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Gmail, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn, co-create, and adapt to new systems and processes
  • Familiarity with database and room-booking and scheduling programs, or willingness to learn.

Position Requirements:

  • COVID-19  Vaccination. Full vaccination against COVID-19 expected unless medically contraindicated.
  • Background Check. FCCB expects all employees to complete a Live Scan Background Check that is valid in the State of California as a condition of their employment. A renewed Live Scan Background Check will be required every 5 years of employment at FCCB. FCCB will reimburse employees for the cost of the Live Scan Background Check each time it is required for employment at FCCB.
  • Eligible to be employed in the United States. New hires will be required to complete Section 1 of federal Form I-9 on the first day of paid employment and must present acceptable documents authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services providing identity and employment authorization no later than the third business day following the start of employment with FCCB.

Emerging Music Ministry Leader

First Church Berkeley UCC, a progressive, welcoming community, is recruiting an Emerging Music Ministry Leader to work in partnership with the Director of Music to plan, select and lead music at worship services and church events.

Essential duties include:

  • selecting, coordinating and leading music at select worship services and church events, approximately once every four to six weeks;
  • coordinating and leading rehearsals, as needed, for selected music;
  • other duties as assigned

This is an independent contractor position that requires:

  • a familiarity with, and desire to, explore contemporary progressive Christian worship music;
  • the ability and desire to encourage the musical talents of community members;
  • a proven ability to recruit volunteers and to work collegially with them and church staff
  • strong communication skills.
