At Learning Hour on Sun., Feb. 23, Psychiatrist and Journalist Dr. Alice Feller will discuss the failure of our mental health system to provide care and treatment for the severely mentally ill. Dr. Feller will present vignettes from her 40 years of clinical practice illustrating how federal legislation, closure of state mental hospitals, fee for service billing, and the advent of electronic medical records have been disastrous for the severely mentally ill, the majority of whom can only get treatment in prison. Many are living on our streets today. Dr. Feller will discuss ways in which the system could be mended, as discussed in her recently published book, American Madness: Fighting for Patients in a Broken Mental Health System.
