LENT 2021 REPAIRING THE BREACH

Lent 2021: Repairing the Breach

This Lent we will lend our attention to the idea of Repairing the Breach, from the words of Isaiah,

Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to live in.

As we reckon with our nation’s history and present of entrenched violent racism, as we heed the call of Bishop William Barber and the Poor People’s Campaign to be “Repairers of the Breach,” and as we inch closer to quite literally rebuilding our own “ancient ruins” on the corner of Dana and Channing, we will pause to locate ourselves in this moment of history as a people God calls to be healers and builders.

Our Lenten programming will include a virtual Lenten Retreat, an opportunity to be in accountability groups around specific Lenten “fasts” (more details soon), participation in daily prayer texts from Rev. Kelly, an All Church Book Study of Rev. William Barber’s The Third Reconstruction, and learning and discussion about the big concept of reparations for slavery, including how it links to our Lent-long offering to a new Black Homeownership Fund.

As we get ready to leap into Lent, we remember this one among the many phrases still ringing through our minds from the inauguration poem by youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman: “Being American is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we step into and how we repair it.”
