March 3 Learning Hour: Civil Rights Pilgrimage

Sun., March 3, 2024, 11:45 am
Loper Chapel

Beloved, 28 of your fellow Firsties and people close to them went on pilgrimage to Selma and Montgomery AL, to literally walk in the footsteps of the “footsoldiers” who undertook the march for voting rights. We prayerfully experienced The Legacy Museum that traced the history of racial terror in America from The Middle Passage through to lynching, Jim Crow and mass incarceration. We pilgrimed through the Memorial to lynching during the Jim Crow era that the Equal Justice Initiative has erected high on a hill, and we sang, prayed and processed it all with heart and eye to the questions our leader Brittany Walker Pettigrew asked us: “what is your relationship to this history? What is your stake in the future?”

We’d like to share our experiences with you and make them yours–and ask you the same questions. Please join us for a Learning Hour after worship this Sunday, March 3. We’ll have further testimonies, a slideshow, a chance to ask questions of the pilgrims, and then begin to wonder together how to take the work of racial justice forward.
